Caldwell Platinum Series G3 Earmuffs
I have owned a number of different electronic earmuffs over the years ranging from very bad (ProEars200)(see my review) to very good (Walker Game Ears), with some good products in-between (Peltor,Howard Leigh). I rate this Caldwell model as good as or better than the Walker Quads. The G3's are comfortable to wear all day long, they enhance all sounds and they effectively dampen the noise of gunshots. I like the design of these muffs because they can fold for storage and the thin wire frames holding the ear pieces do not come in contact with the gun stock as can happen with the Walker. The on/off switch does not protrude and normally does not come on when folding the muffs as some of the other designs do. I still check the LEDs (a very good idea) to insure they are off before putting them away. I have not experienced any of the issues some of the other reviewers have had. I have no problems inserting batteries or closing the battery compartment doors. It is an excellent product...
best electronics so far, but a poorly executed case
Over the last few months I have been shopping for a decent pair of electronic earmuffs. This model captured my eye because it uses 'compression' technology instead of 'cut-off' technology. The difference is not very noticable when you are firing a gun, or standing very close to someone who is... even the compression technology is obliged to dampen the noise of the gun to such a degree that it effectively cuts out the sound of someone speaking to you. Where it shines is when you are standing back from the firing line trying to have a conversation. The compression technology effectively dampens the gun noise while allowing the voice of someone (standing close to you) to be clearly heard. This contrasts sharply with the 'cut-off' technology which completely shuts off the microphones during a shot, even when you are standing well back from the firing line.
With regards to these muffs... they are a good implementation of the compression technology at a good price. The...
Excellent Product!
I've used these several times now on the range and love 'em! It's hard to see why anyone would want anything more/else. From the more expensive ones I've tested, these (Platnum Pro G3) appear to perform equally as well. I especially like that this model attenuates gunshots to the speaking level you have set rather than cut out completely during the shot which is annoying when giving lessons on the range. They're so comfortable that I forget I have them on, especially when wearing my shooting glasses with their strap rather than the normal ear pieces. I've regularly worn them 2-3 hours at a time. I'm now recommending these to students during class, and will be purchasing extras as 'loaners' for students to use/try.
