Lives Up to the Promise
I bought the Tiger Shark Elite to complete my little collection of the SOG "Seal" series of knives. Like all of SOG's Seal series, this knife is made of AUS 8 steel, a good all around stainless alloy, not one of the super premium steels but certainly good enough. They formerly used AUS 6, which in my opinion was NOT good enough. CM 154 or S30V steel would drive the prices up out of sight and make them unaffordable for the average guy.
I had to smile when I saw the review which downgraded the Tiger Shark for being too big. If the reviewer had done a little research before buying, he would have seen that Sog makes 2 smaller versions of this knife: The Seal Team (or Seal Team Elite), with a 7 inch blade and the Seal Pup (or Seal Pup Elite), with a blade just shy of 5 inches. Identical shaped blades, same steel, just smaller. Duhhhh. The Tiger Shark is what it is, and I believe the size is mentioned in the advertisment.
The sheath is OK, with a couple of shortcomings...
Survival knife on steroids
If you buy no other knife, buy this one. I just cleared shooting lanes in northern WI and it cut everything, and after a quick touch is razor sharp again. Be careful when putting on the handguard. The tolerances are very close (good thing) and as some have said you can strip threads. I was also skeptical about the assembly in Taiwan, but this IS AUS stainless steel, which is very close to 440C. The lock strap does work if you have the handguard on. Buy this and let the destruction begin! Yay Zombie apocalypse!
A BEAST OF A KNIFE
This is one of the largest knives in my collection and possibly the most impressive. I comes razor sharp out of the box and the serrations are wickedly sharp. The blade is about .24 thick at the base and thins out to a fine point. I have tested the point and unless you use a file or stab a safe many times you will not break it.
SOG's unique cryogenic heat treatment process slowly decreases the knife temperature to -300 F, then brings it back up to room temperature again. This process relieves the blade material on an atomic level, resulting in an overall increase in toughness and heightened wear-resistance. Additionally, knife edges stay sharper longer and demonstrate a significant decrease in micro-fracturing and edge-chipping. This knife will last you a lifetime and I would bet my life on its durability.
What knife would I like to have...
